Kidz R Us was established in 2002 when Diane Dann, one of our founders, was approached by a few children requesting her to organise dance classes and help them develop their skills in stage performances. Diane agreed and the classes began with only three children. It was not later than a couple of months that the membership sprung from 3 to 120. The organisation expanded and went on to add other aspects of performances such as technical theatre.
We moved to St. James Community Centre shortly, however we knew we would require a bigger premises to accommodate the growing number of children and the numerous costumes and props. In 2006, we bought the former Park Place Chapel in Georgetown, Tredegar to accommodate the growing strength. Though it was priced at £50,000, we could roughly arrange £10,000 from our community centre. Diane and Gary Dann offered their home on mortgage to secure a loan of £40,000. There was no looking back after this procurement; Kidz R Us kept on adding to its family that continues to grow even today!
Kidz R Us is a non-profit, self-funding social community enterprise, which teaches performing arts (primarily, street dancing, drama and singing) to the children of Tredegar and the surrounding areas in South East Wales. We host activities for more than 500 disadvantaged children every week. For more information, get in touch with us today!
